Lecture on ‘Social Exclusion : meaning, mechanisms and measurement criteria in community’
The lecturer started his presentation by clarifying the meaning of the concept of social issue, and the
different sociological theories which shows social economy dimensions. According to him, these dimensions encompass : Solidarity dimension, the political dimension of public policies that have been historically expanding, and the social dimension (the importance of natural solidarity which guaranteed priority to social institutions, especially the role of the family in the Algerian society during crisis such as : unemployment, loss of jobs, housing problems, and social security). Throughout the lecture, students were directed to read works of some of the most important theorists who dealt with social exclusion, namely: S. Paugam, R. Castel, and P. Rozanvallon.
The lecture was beneficent and attracted the audience. This has been seen throughout the various questions and debates raised by students, such as the role of the state in reducing the negative effects of exclusion, and why are there still people living on the margins of society accepting their poverty, and not caring about the social developments happening around them.
